California Preventive and Occupational Medicine Residency Programs

These are the residency programs currently operating in California, which prepare physicians for specialty Board exams offered by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) in Preventive Medicine and in Occupational Medicine. There is no residency program in Aerospace Medicine in California. As used below, “Categorical Preventive Medicine residency” means one that qualifies the resident for ABPM boards in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health. Except as noted (at Loma Linda University), both Preventive Medicine and Occupational Medicine residencies only accept candidates who have already completed a PGY-1 year. An MPH is a typical part of each residency, however with an increase in join degree programs in medical schools (see separate list), many residents also enter residency programs having already completed an MPH degree. Links below are to the specific residencies. An equal amount of detail was not available from every program. This information is being posted in January 2022, and is subject to change, so best to follow the links and to check with individual programs. Please submit any updates or corrections to info@capreventivemed.org.

GENERAL PREVENTIVE MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH:

California Department of Public Health: Categorical Preventive Medicine residency, usually requiring only two years. The MPH takes up a dedicated year and is provided at one of three universities, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, or UCLA, if applicant does not already have this degree. A practicum year is then conducted at a local public health department. Applications are processed through the American College of Preventive Medicine.

Loma Linda University: Categorical Preventive Medicine under the lead of the Department of Preventive Medicine in the School of Medicine. (A combined Preventive/Family Medicine residency has been redesigned to allow combination with any other residency.) The MPH is provided at Loma Linda’s own School of Public Health, tuition-free, and is blended with the practicum rotations so that the residency can be completed in two years for those who (as with other residencies listed here) have already completed a PGY-1 year. Residents entering the program with another completed ACGME residency and at least half of an MPH can complete the new combination program in only one year. There is a unique annual 1-position Preventive Medicine PGY-1 year, under the lead of the Transitional Year office in the School of Medicine. Residency applications go through ERAS, and those for the PGY-1 position are eligible for the match.

UC San Francisco/UC Berkeley/Kaiser Permanente San Francisco: Combined Internal Medicine/Preventive Medicine four-year residency under the lead of the UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Candidates apply for the match through Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center (program ID 7510544011in FREIDA/AMA database). The MPH is provided at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. Two residents are accepted annually.

UC Los Angeles (UCLA): Combined Preventive Medicine/Internal Medicine four-year residency, also described as a fellowship, under the lead of the Fielding School of Public Health, which provides the MPH tuition-free in the fourth year.

UC San Diego/San Diego State University: Categorical Preventive Medicine residency, recently transferred to the UCSD School of Public Health, where it is housed in Health Sciences. The MPH is provided at San Diego State School of Public Health, which co-sponsors the program. Residents are considered house staff at UCSD. The 2-year program includes clinical preventive medicine, research skills, and population medicine, with an emphasis on underserved populations and lifestyle medicine. There are concentration tracks in border health, cancer control and prevention, addiction medicine, lifestyle medicine, clinical preventive medicine and public health, and most recently, with funding from HRSA, a track in population approaches to improving maternal health. Applicants apply through ERAS.

OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE:

Loma Linda University: (Occupational and Environmental Medicine) The residency is under the lead of the Department of Preventive Medicine in the School of Medicine. The MPH is provided at Loma Linda’s own School of Public Health, tuition-free, and is blended with the practicum rotations so that the residency can be completed in two years for those who (as with other residencies listed here) have already completed a PGY-1 year. As with Loma Linda’s Preventive Medicine residency, there is a unique 1-position annual Occupational Medicine PGY-1 year, under the lead of the Transitional Year office in the School of Medicine. Residency applications are through ERAS, and those for the PGY-1 position are eligible for the match.

University of California, Irvine: Two-year residency program including MPH studies on campus provided through the Program on Public Health, and practicum rotations. Applicants apply under Preventive Medicine residencies in ERAS.

UC San Francisco/UC Berkeley: (Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Department of Medicine) This is a two-year residency designed to prepare physicians for occupational and environmental medicine practice and leadership roles including in clinical, academic, government, non-governmental organizations, consulting, or corporate settings. It is a two-year residency, which includes an MPH or MS degree at UC Berkeley. For residents who have completed a residency in medicine, family medicine or general preventive medicine and public health and already have an MPH, the duration of the residency in one year. The program combines industrial hygiene and clinical preventive medicine through UCSF and affiliated programs (the San Francisco Kaiser Permanente Occupational Medicine Clinic, the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SFVAMC), the San Francisco Division of the California State Poison Control System, and the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit). Program admission is through ERAS.
